Jamie Dimon Keeps It Real: Mortgage Lending Isn’t Easy

June 11, 2025 | Industry News | Presented by ReadySetLoan

The mortgage world got a little honesty this week from one of the biggest names in banking. Speaking at a Morgan Stanley investor conference, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon didn’t hold back when asked about the challenges in mortgage lending.

“It’s a tough business,” Dimon admitted, sharing just how difficult it’s been for big banks to consistently turn a profit on mortgages over the years.

In fact, Dimon estimated that Chase has likely lost money on mortgage lending over the past 50 years. A big part of the struggle? Ever-changing rules, regulations, and compliance demands. “And it’s being made worse by regulators and rules and regulations,” he added.

Still, Dimon remains hopeful that with some regulatory changes, Chase might eventually “eke out a decent return” in the future.
