This past Sunday, Connecticut residents got a wild surprise at Harkness Memorial State Park. What started as a cheerful family outing featuring kites shaped like otters (adorable), stingrays (majestic), and owls (wise?) quickly turned into a high-flying fiasco worthy of its own Netflix docuseries: When Kites Go Rogue.
It began innocently. Kathleen Edgecomb and her husband were enjoying the sunshine and the uplifting vibes at a local kite event. Suddenly, an oversized otter mama and baby combo pulled a Houdini act and escaped skyward — flying out of the park, out of view, and possibly out of the state.
“The otters are way out of range, aren’t they?” said Edgecomb, seconds before everyone realized the otter-shaped clouds were in fact... kites.
Not to be outdone, a stingray and owl followed suit like a poorly planned animal jailbreak. But here’s where it gets truly electrifying: the otter kite allegedly clipped a power line on its high-altitude joyride — knocking out power at a college campus. Somewhere, a student lost their unsaved final paper while the otters soared off into legend.
